Supplement: Berberine

Berberine is a plant-derived compound that has been extracted from bark and used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. One of berberine's most notable benefits is its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. It works by activating an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). When taken as a supplement it has profound benefits on glucose metabolism, lowering glucose levels and improving insulin sensitivity. In addition to its effects on glucose metabolism, berberine has been studied for its cholesterol-lowering properties. It can reduce levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides while simultaneously increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol. Recent research has also shown that it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower inflammation. As it is not found in any foods, it can only be taken as a 
supplement.
